The Toolbox is a hostile, animated red toolbox you face in The Shed during The Depths section. It doesn’t act like a normal “character” with dialogue and choices—it’s a physical threat that turns the tools theme into a full boss encounter built around teamwork.

This fight is basically a co-op skills test: one player creates openings, the other cashes them in.

Why This Boss Feels Different

By the time you reach it, the game has already taught you the core tool pairing: May uses the hammer, while Cody throws nails and can call them back. The boss is designed to force you to use that kit under pressure.

How the Fight Works

You’re fighting for access, not raw damage. The Toolbox is protected by padlocks you can only break after you pin an arm and build a safe route across.

The setup you repeat

• Survive the arena hazards, especially falling nails telegraphed by shadows.
• Wait for the sweeping arm attack, then jump over it.
• As soon as the arm is down, Cody nails the arm into the arena to hold it in place.
• Cody places additional nails so May can swing across with the hammer and reach the side platform.
• May breaks a padlock, then gets launched back, and you do it again for the next lock.

What the Toolbox Tries to Do to You

Once you’ve proven you can pin the arm and cross, the fight ramps up by shrinking your safe space.

• It starts cutting the platform down with saws and drilling hazards while nails keep falling.
• Later, it switches to a heavy tool strike that can pin you if you’re late on the dodge.

The Finisher

The win condition is an explosive target on top of the Toolbox.

• When the boss’s tool arm gets stuck, Cody stands on it.
• May hits the yellow switch with the hammer to launch Cody upward.
• While airborne, Cody fires nails into the explosive canister on top of the Toolbox.
• Repeat until it blows.
